As a dedicated fan of high-output pickups, my recent revelation was the absence of Alnico 8-powered pickups in my guitar collection. Enter the Pegcity Pickups Angry Widows, a pair of high-output humbuckers that not only ignited my curiosity but also added a new sonic dimension to my musical arsenal.
Let me share my journey with these pickups, now residing in my Gibson SG, affectionately dubbed Phony Iommi due to its visual homage to Tony’s iconic guitar.
The Angry Widows wasted no time in asserting their sonic dominance. Instantly, I found myself transported to the Palm Desert metal scene, where gritty mids and an aggressive, raw punishing tone ruled the sonic landscape. Playing through a VOX AC30 with the gain cranked, the pickups roared with intensity. Transitioning to my Marshall JCM 2000, I noticed a subtle smoothing of tones, retaining the pickups’ touch sensitivity and delivering endless sustain—a characteristic that remained consistent across both amps.
Curious to explore the softer side of the Angry Widows, I plugged into my Roland JC120. Switching to the neck pickup and dialing back the volume, I discovered a surprising versatility. The pickups not only delivered crystal-clear cleans but also facilitated enjoyable jazz runs with full and musical tones—a testament to their beautiful voicing.
Pegcity Pickups prides itself as Canada’s #1 home for hand-built, hand-wound guitar pickups. The Angry Widows exemplify this commitment, crafted with precision and utilizing Alnico 8 magnets to achieve dynamic note separation, tight low-end response, and a balanced midrange. Whether diving into metal, doom, punk, or hard rock, the Angry Widows deliver a sonic onslaught with undeniable Alnico 8 attitude.
Alnico 8, while less common than Alnico 5, takes center stage in the Angry Widows. Comprising 7% Aluminum, 15% Nickel, 35% Cobalt, 4% Copper, and 5% Titanium, this magnet type shares characteristics with ceramic magnets, offering a very high output level, pronounced treble, and excellent definition. The result? Gritty, thick, and warm tones that make Alnico 8 an excellent choice for the bridge pickup, though a paired set is entirely possible.
For those seeking a powerful and aggressive tone, Alnico 8 magnets are the ticket. With an Angry Widow set, you’ll experience heightened output, increased low mids, and a smoother treble response. The bass presence is substantial.
The Pegcity Pickups Angry Widows have earned their place as a sonic force to be reckoned with. They embody the perfect marriage of power, aggression, and versatility, making them a must-consider option for any guitarist seeking to expand their tonal palette. The Angry Widows are not just pickups; they are the architects of a sonic revolution.
Put these in a guitar I made for a friend of mine and these were absolutely perfect. I was going to say gorgeous but I’m not sure “gorgeous“ is what someone is looking for in a P90.
The best analogy I can use is these P90s are exactly how I like my rum: Thick and full of flavour with just the right about of hatred.
Great stuff Kris. Can’t wait to get the Two Strokes installed!
The prompt attention to my order, the absolutely excellent packaging, and I mean excellent, were all top notch. The pickup I ordered, which was the vintage strat bridge pickup, is, in my humble opinion, the hardest pickup to sound good of any guitar anywhere, actually now sounds good! I would wholeheartedly recommend this company, and while I've only tried this one product, I will definintely be back. Plus, I wanted to buy Canadian, so that's just an added bonus. Thanks guys.
I understand that tone is mostly in the fingers, but I knew that the burst buckers in my 335 just weren’t cutting it. I’d heard great things about Pegcity so I decided to go with the classic 59s. I watch a lot of Tom Bukovac so I have an idea of what PAFs are supposed to sound like. These are the ones! Exactly what I was after: sweet, clear, very dynamic. I never understood what true string clarity was, hitting a chord and hearing all the notes, as well as all the new sweet spots hidden away in the volume and tone pots. Clean, dirty, or effects, so much more guitar here now.
And to top it off, there was a mixup with the delivery company. Not Kris’ fault but he made after hours calls regardless, and had it sorted out right away.
For the price, I am ridiculously happy with my choice to go with Pegcity. This will not be my last purchase from them!
The stock pickup that was included with my Tele build was too bassy for my taste but the Southern Twang pickup cleared the air. Of course it still has a nice full frequency range but with more bite and top end which makes it much more useful for the styles of music that I cover. Very pleased. The service was also stellar.
I put this Jazz bass pickup in the bridge position of my Godin Freeway bass. What a great way to bring the bass to life. I only use the bridge pickup. My Godin LG will be the next for a new pickup.
I buy Canadian as much as possible.
I’ve ordered several different sets of pickups for my guitar collection from Pegcity, including humbuckers, P90’s, Jazzmaster single coils, etc. and I’ve never been disappointed by the quality and service! These are some of the best sounding pickups I’ve played. Hands down.
Great service from Kris. These days “good enough” service is the norm, but the Peg City experience is fantastic. He really helped me thru the purchase, and everything was top notch. Congrats.
A bit darker compared to the stock American Pro II pickups, but in a good way. More output volume as well. I dig it!
I had a Jay Turser P.bass. that had stock pickups. I unplugged it, replaced the electronics and went and plugged it back in. Huge difference! I scared myself a bit with a how responsive it was. A little pluck or slap could now shake the room. Clear tone and I find myself leaving the volume in the same place. Dig in a bit and they give back! Great product, great value and Kris is awesome to work with. He will find you whatever tone you’re looking for.
We chose PegCity to be our exclusive pickup supplier because we want to offer our customers the best. Kris hit's it out of the park every time, period. He works directly with us, is full of great insight and advice, has fantastic attention to detail and a discerning ear. You really get something extra special in every custom spec'd, hand-wound PegCity pickup, and that's pretty cool. Why would you do anything else? Seriously. And Canadian as well. Thanks Kris! You're the best.
High quality pickup. Nice sound. I screwed up in my ordering and should have had 4c wiring for splitting coil. Kris offered to rewire the pick up for free. Great service. Thanks Kris.
These strat pickups are perfect. Nicely balanced, good output, well finished, and no stratitis! I'm very happy to see high quality pickups being made in Canada. I used to be a Lollar guy, but now I'm a Peg City guy!
I just installed a set of angry widows into a les paul and they are amazing! I’ve bought quite a bit of gear in search of “the perfect tone” and usually I’ll get it and feel like it came up slightly short of my expectations. Not these! Soldered them in, plugged in and it was instant gratification! They sound killer. In guitars I’ve had a SD JB/ hot rail combo, emg 81/85, SD distortion, dimarzio mo joe…the angry widows beat them all. They have a clear, crisp chunk to them and great note articulation. Buy a set!
Also, Kris has the best customer service I’ve seen in years! Awesome guy
I finally had a chance to install the pickups into a new P Bass Project and am super impressed with them. Clean lows, bright highs and matched with an orange drop cap, I am in love and will definately order from Kris for future projects. IMO, you will not find a better crafted pickup at Pegcity's or anyones price point for that matter.
Coli split or Partial split and which one to use.
Due to the demand for tonal flexibility. Wiring humbuckers to split the coils in an attempt to achieve a single coil tone has become the standard. The truth is a humbucker with lower output (below 10.0k) when split can produce a weaker sound thats lower in volume. We highly recommend adding a 7.5k resistor into the circuit inline with the wire that links the splitting pot to the ground. This will allow some of the signal from the split coil to leak through boosting the overall signal just enough. The partial split will result in a very comparative single coil tone that retains its volume and presence. We recommend this mod for any of the humbuckers in our lineup that are below 10k. Look for it in the options list when you are making your choice on humbucker pickups.
Our humbuckers that we recommend this mod for are Private Stock, Smokey Nights jazz bucker,Classic 59's, 66'ers, True North PAF, mini humbuckers and firebird pickups.
We can also sell these resistors separately if you want to add them to an existing set you have.
